A52 Clifton Bridge Strengthening Project

12:00 - 12:25 CIHT Award Winners
  • Winner of the CIHT Infrastructure Award in 2022. This project was recognised for exceptional engineering solutions that have delivered creative and resilient infrastructure.
  • When the Clifton Bridge, outside Nottingham, underwent scheduled inspection in 2019, engineers identified some basic maintenance was required, involving drainage and basic concrete repairs. The process of carrying out those repairs on the 243-metre viaduct in 2020, however, revealed further, more serious problems once concrete was removed.
  • This presentation will delve into how different stages and phases were overlapped to enable the project to be delivered in less time. Designers worked alongside contractors to design parts of the project while something else was built.
  • This streamlining of processes enabled the bridge to be safely and rapidly repaired, meaning Nottingham’s reputation as Europe’s most congested city was short lived.
