Traffex 2009 – the knowledge hub of the transport industry

Traffex 2009, the 24th international traffic engineering, intelligent transport systems, road safety and highway maintenance exhibition returns with a dynamic seminar and debate programme. The focus will be on implementation of intelligent transport systems and new technologies to help solve the increasing problems associated with urban and regional travel across the world.

The three-day seminar programme, organised by ITS United Kingdom and The Institution of Highways & Transportation (IHT), will be free to attend, offering visitors a wide range of topical briefings and insights from the transport industry’s leading experts. Visitors can take away ideas for their own work as well as inspiration on collaborations and partnerships. Sessions will be chaired by key industry figures such as Steve Norris, President of ITS (UK), Professor Eric Sampson, Chairman of ITS (UK) and David Tarrant, President of the IHT.

The programme will start with the keynote address from Paul Clarke, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, chaired by professor Eric Sampson CBE, Chairman of ITS (UK).

With numerous sessions each day, this year’s seminars will provide an in-depth look at a diverse range of topical issues and many of the most pertinent questions and pressing matters faced by transport users and planners today, including:

• Casualty reduction
• Passive safety
• Congestion charging
• Delivery of the seamless highway network
• Latest enforcement technologies
• Benefits of intelligent transport systems
• Real time traffic management

On Wednesday 22nd April, David Tarrant, president of IHT will chair sessions from the winners of the 2008 IHT Awards -  ‘Promoting Best Practice in the Highways and Transport Sector’. Seminars will be presented by representatives from Technological Application Award winner – London Borough of Islington; Road Safety Award winner – Norfolk Road Casualty Reduction Partnership; Innovation Award winner – Brighton & Hove City Council and Security in the Public Realm Award winner – West One Infrastructure Services, all talking about their winning projects and findings that can be applied by other professionals in the industry.

Steve Norris, President of ITS (UK), comments: “If you are in the transport technology business at any level you simply can't afford to miss Traffex. These days it has grown to be the "must do" event for the intelligent transport industry, with all the latest ideas and innovations on show and everyone you need to see and listen to on the hot topics of the day."

Eric Sampson, Chairman of ITS (UK) said: “Transport professionals are always seeking to improve the services they design and provide – safer cities, reduced emissions, and uncongested roads.  In the present economic climate, finding the extra few percent of productivity has become vital.  That’s why it’s essential to visit Traffex, to hear the latest thinking, see the latest products, discuss problems with fellow experts and all under one roof. Local authority staff and councillors should particularly visit ITS United Kingdom’s stand to learn what intelligent transport systems can do for you and are already delivering across the country.”

Daniel Isichei, Head of Public Affairs, IHT: “The exhibition at Traffex sees thousands of visitors, made up of members and potential members come through the doors each day, so we believe it is an event that we must support. It provides a great opportunity for suppliers, clients, contractors, consultants and more to come together, share knowledge and promote best practice. It really is not to be missed.”

Visitors to the seminars will have access to the leading authorities on transport from around the world and the opportunity to learn about the future of transport and cutting-edge transport technology. As Traffex is co-located with Parkex; Europe’s largest dedicated parking exhibition and Street Design; a new event for urban design in the public realm, visitors will have a unique opportunity to see over 500 exhibitors from the world of transport, parking and street design all in one central location.

The event will also have additional unique features, such as the Passive Safety Zone, an area where visitors can see real cars being tested with both non passive and passively safe products.  A series of recorded films will highlight the products in action showing the results of live crash testing and experts will be on hand to provide constructive advice on the use of passive safety products in designing safer roads.  There are also over 30 companies exhibiting ‘crash friendly’ and passively safe products at Traffex this year.

ULTRASCAPE, one of Instarmac’s newest brands, will be taking centre stage at Traffex, showcasing products in action in a live competition where leading contractors will be challenged with laying a mini street in a set time. Barry Hunt from The Stone Federation will be judging the contractors work and points will be awarded for the overall finish of the street, along with their workmanship.

Visitors can expect to learn how cutting-edge technologies and new applications can save lives, cut congestion and reduce harmful emissions. With such important issues on the agenda, can you afford to miss it?

Thousands have already registered to attend the combined Traffex, Parkex and Street Design event. To register for a free visitor badge visit www.traffex.com
